It's a special occasion not only here in Chicago, but world-wide!  It was 10 years ago this week that President Clinton declared the end of Selective Availability for Satellites Signals and the following day Selective Availability was in fact turned off.  Then is was on May 3, 2000 the Dave Ulmer hid his "stash" (the very first known and soon to be known as Geocache) near Portland Oregon and this awesome pastime we now call Geocaching would soon become a viral sensation.  Now some 990,589 (as of 2/20/2010) active caches later here we are.  So won't you please come and join us in celebrating 10 years of Geocaching in Chicago?  We are starting the celebration off with a little fuel for the body and soul with some good Old Country Breakfast!

As a precursor to our event later in the day today; GC23WW6 10 Years! (Chicago IL) GeoGolf II Signals Birthday Party. we are holding a Breakfast Meet & Greet with hopes that his will give you a jump start on your caching day.  With the abundance of caches in our area in addition to our goal of at least 100 new caches to be placed for in celebration of the Geocaching Anniversary (with a little help from local hiders of course) we are sure that you will have more than enough caching to do for the day.  Also at this event we will be announcing our Contest of the Day with prizes to be awarded at Signal's Birthday Party later in the day.  Un-like last year, this contest will be based on you visiting new hides in the area and will not involve hunting older caches.

Any local cachers who would like to assist us in making our goal by placing an Anniversary Cache ( We would like to suggest them name: 10 Years! - My cache hide, choose your own name)  and have their cache included as part of the contest, please drop me a note.  Princess and I hope to see all of you there to help kick off the Celebration!!

A special commemorative coin is being minted honoring the 10 years of Geocaching (a mock up can be seen here) and will be available at the event in limited quantities.  The coin details are as follows: 1.75” x 3mm, 2D, Imitation hard enamel, Polished finish, Rim text and laser engraving, Groundspeak tracking, Custom icon.  This special coin will have a limited one time production (only 125 are being minted) and will only be available at these two events.  Feel free to contact me if you are interested in a coin.

Update 2-25-2010:  Oak Coins has sent out the invoice for the coins and it has been paid with delivery expected near the end of April.  We have gotten a number of inquiries about "how do I get a coin", they will be available on a first come first served basis at both of the events being held on May 1st.  We are also taking pre-orders and if you are interested in that we can send you a PayPal invoice so you can reserve in advance.
