sestieri e si sviluppa su ben 118 isolette collegate da 354 ponti e
divise da 177 canali. A Venezia il sestiere corrisponde al
quartiere di altre città e rappresenta idealmente la quarta parte
dell'accampamento romano, schema ideale della costruzione di un
gran numero di centri abitati europei. La suddivisione di Venezia
in sestieri ha origini antichissime. I nomi dei 6 sestieri di
Venezia sono:
- Cannaregio, chiamato così perché originariamente si
sviluppava in una zona paludosa con molti canneti;
- Castello, che ha preso il nome da un fortino ormai
scomparso attorno a cui si è sviluppata l'area. Durante la
Serenissima era il centro militare e marittimo della città, con la
costruzione dell’Arsenale;
- Dorsoduro, chiamato così perché anticamente la zona era
caratterizzata da un terreno stabile (dal dorso duro), molto meno
paludoso che nelle altre aree di Venezia. Probabilmente il suo nome
deriva dalle compatte dune di sabbia che erano presenti in questa
zona;
- San Marco, il centro politico ed economico della città,
che prende il nome dalla famosa basilica;
- San Polo, il centro geografico di Venezia;
- Santa Croce, il più piccolo dei sestieri, oggi
fortemente influenzato dalla presenza della stazione ferroviaria e
da Piazzale Roma, terminal per il traffico veicolare.
Questa cache è relativa al sestiere di Santa Croce. Venezia si
trova nella parte nord-orientale dell'Italia, tra il mare Adriatico
e la Pianura Padana. E 'la capitale della Regione Veneto e nel 2004
contava una popolazione di circa 60.000 abitanti che vivono nel
centro storico della città. La città è stata costruita su 117 isole
all'interno di una laguna costiera.
Questa cache è nascosta nei pressi del Ponte della Libertà, la

354 bridges and divided by 177 channels. The city is traditionally
divided into six sestieri. These sestieri would
correspond to district towns and they ideally represents a part of
the Roman encampment. The subdivision into districts of Venice has
very ancient origins. The names of the 6 sestieri of Venice are:
- Cannaregio, so named because it originally developed in
a swampy area with lots of reeds;
- Castello (Castle), which took its name from a
disappeared military fort;
- Dorsoduro (hard ridge"), so named because the area was
formerly characterized by a stable land;
- San Marco, the political and economic center of the
city, takes its name from the famous basilica;
- San Polo, the geographic center of Venice;
- Santa Croce (Holy Cross), the smallest of the
districts.
This cache is hidden in the sestiere of Santa Croce. Venice is
located in the north-eastern part of Italy between the Adriatic Sea
and the Po Valley. It is the capital of the Veneto region, and in
2004 counted a population of about 60,000 inhabitants living in the
historic city center. The city was built on 117 islands in a
coastal Lagoon.
The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the
Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades
and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of
commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the
13th century up to the end of the 17th century.
This cache is hidden near the Ponte della Libertà (the
Freedom Bridge), the major route connecting Venice to the mainland.
Apparently, this is not a very spectacular place, as expected in
Venice, and it is located away from touristic tour. However, the
cache was ideated to bring you to know some unknown aspect of the
city. Here, you can see the porto fluviale, where the trucks
coming from the mainland unload the goods needed for the city.
Subsequently, the goods are uploaded into little ships and, then,
distributed all around the city. Here, you can also see the Freedom
Bridge (3,850 m long) and the Main entrance of the Port of Venice.
The cache is a well hidden original micro container. Bring a pen to
