Geocache Description:

This driving tour will take you to various historical spots in Rescue listed in the "Riding and Reminiscing through Rescue" booklet which was put out by the Rescue Historical Society in 1995. There are many more spots listed in the touring guide but at most of those locations there are no remaining structures of interest. I have only included one spot that does not have a historic structure.

It contains the below admonition.

"When driving this tour, please remain in your car. Please respect the owners' privacy and do not trespass on the properties featured in this booklet."

The exception would be the Community Center and the Pleasant Grove House which has two monuments along the road which are accessible.

At each location you will get a number from something (generally the address). The number needed is listed below with the child waypoint. You will then have to do some simple math which is listed at the bottom of this page. From there you will go to the final location (above coordinates) and use the four numbers you finish with to open the cache container. I have provided a checksum to make sure you have the right numbers. The container will open easily if the numbers are correct although it might take a little jiggling. DO NOT FORCE IT. Anyone wanting the plans for this container email me and I will send you what I got from the forums.

Rescue Store

The present site of the Rescue Junction Store (Now Roadhouse) is where the Post Office was located from June 12, 1985 to 1962. The store was built by Dr. Merritt Hunter and family. The Post Office was established with the assistance of D'Courcey Hodgkin. Dr. Hunter became its first Postmaster on June 12, 1895. William Carpenter was appointed Postmaster in 1896. The Post Office remained in the Carpenter family until 1948. The Carpenter family still lives in the area; "Carp" retired as Chief from the Fire Department and runs the Historical Society.

A = What is the middle number of the Landmark # on "The Coloma Road" landmark in front behind the fence?

Community Center

The Rescue Community Center was dedicated in 1951. It was built through the efforts of the local residents to further the civic, cultural, and social development of the community.

When the Tennessee School burned, the Center became a schoolroom for the students of that school, as well as those of the Green Valley and Deer Valley Schools, which had closed.

The Penny Club, which began in 1927 with membership available for one penny per month (those were hard times), used the building at times when it was not convenient to meet in the members homes.

Forty years later, the Rescue Community Center is still a popular meeting place and is used by many individuals and groups.

B = How many handicapped parking signs on the fence in front of the building?

White Oak Flat

This area was once a large ranch owned by Arthur Litten. He came by ox team from Massac County Il to Dry Creek and tried prospecting, but went into merchandising near Jayhawk. He purchased White Oak Flat in 1859. A big barn still stands as a remnant of the ranch and the Litten-McDonald Bridge that crosses White Oak Creek to the ranch.

C = What is the first number of the address on the mailbox?

Wing's Home

The now existing structure, which is the home of Ila and Arthur Brazil, replaced the original brick house after it burned to the ground. Ila Brazil was born Ila Wing, descendant of John and Louisa Wing. After John died suddenly in 1876 Louisa operated a roadhouse that became popular among travelers of the day. The stone foundations of both house and barn are the original ones.

D = What is the last number of the address on the mailbox?

Skinners Winery

James Skinner's Winery was located on what is now the corner of Green Valley Rd. and Cameron Park Dr. The wine cellar was built by Skinner about 1860.

It was one of the most extensive operations fo that day producing about 15,000 gallons of wine per year. The only remains of the winery are located inside the Green Valley Nursery now located on that corner.

Kitty Corner and up on the hill above the small shopping center is the Skinner Cemetery which contained a cache that has been archived.

E = What is the first number of the speed limit sign in front?

Pleasant Grove house

This ranch is the site of a popular roadhouse where the Pony Express mounts were changed from July ? 1860 to June 30, 1861

The Pleasant Grove House was also a stopping place for stagecoaches and water for horses could be bought for 5 cents a bucket.

In the yard stands an enormous fig tree which reportedly was planted as a twig by members of a passing wagon train going to Mormon Island, a few miles to the north. This is one of the few remaining roadhouses in the Rescue area.

F = What is the starting date in July for when mounts were changed?

Zentgraf House

Jacob Zentgraf emigrated from Germany in 1852 and began mining on Weber Creek. In 1854, he bought the present site along with his brother, Antone. The previous owner, Mr. Stevens, had set out 32 grapevines in 1849 and Zentgraf continued the vineyard.

The large adobe home was erected in 1871 and stands today. On the inside of the house the area is partitioned with wooden walls on large iron hinges. The walls could be folded up and hooked to the ceiling to make one large room for dancing. The old winery cellar is located across the road.

G = Mailbox has disappearred so no number here just enjoy the house.

Deer Valley School

Deer Valley School had its beginnings in the upper floor of Conrad Etzel's Pinchem Tight Merchandising Store which was a little further up the road. When the Deer Valley School District was organized, a school house was built just off Deer Valley Rd. between the Kipp home and the Pinchem Tight Ranch. The building was torn down around 1955. The school was in the area of the two homes on the North side which are currently occupied by two sisters and their husbands.

There is nothing remaining of the Pinchem Tight community of merchants which was just a little further up the road but in case you were wondering about how it got the name here it is:

The method an early store proprietor used for payment was to take a pinch of gold dust between his thumb and fingers while the miners would remind him to "pinchem tight. It is not clear whether the tighter the fingers, the more or less gold would be obtained, but the saying stuck. All stores in the area became known as "Pinchem Tight" stores.

The other hopefully future historical site can be seen on the south side where my driveway starts.

H = What is the sum of the last two numbers of the address on the post if you are looking North(Orange Letters)?

Now for the math. The code for entering the cache is four numbers:

The description of the waypoints tells you what number to take from each location for the following math.

1st = A + B
2nd = C + D
3rd = E + F
4th = G + H

Checksum = 19
