Geotop Aghios Pavlos (St. Paul)
Geotope sind erdgeschichtliche Gebilde der unbelebten Natur, die Erkenntnisse über die Entwicklung der Erde und der Entstehung des Lebens vermitteln. Geotope sind von Natur aus außerordentlich vielgestaltig. Zu den Geotopen zählt man beispielsweise markante, auffällige Felsformationen, Aufschlüsse von Gesteinen und Bodenformationen, wichtige Fundstellen von Mineralien und Fossilien sowie natürliche Landschaftselemente (Höhlen, Dolinen).(Quelle: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geotop)
Die griechische Insel Kreta liegt an einer tektonisch sehr aktiven Stelle im Mittelmeer, der Subduktionszone, an der die afrikanische Platte unter die europäische geschoben wird. Deshalb gibt es hier auch die meisten Erdbeben in Europa. Da die Herde in großer Tiefe liegen, werden aber selten große Schäden angerichtet. Durch die geotektonischen Bewegungen kommt es zu Störungen der Sedimentschichten durch Faltungen und Verwerfungen.
In Aghios Pavlos kann man in einem Geotop einmalige Gesteinsformationen sehen, die die Ergebnisse der Verwerfungen der Schichten von Kalk und Chert zeigen (siehe Bild)

Vom Parkplatz kann man entlang des Strandes über eine lange Treppe zum EarthCache kommen.
Besonders im Sommer ziemlich schweißtreibend!
Bitte die Antworten auf folgende Fragen an den Owner schicken:
1. Wie viele Stufen der Treppe muss man hochsteigen um zum EarthCache kommen?
2. Auf welcher Höhe über NN liegt der im Bild sichtbare Fuß des Felsen (+- 3m)?
Mache ein Bild von Dir vor dem Felsen und lade es mit Deinem Log hoch.
Ihr könnt direkt loggen. Sollte es Probleme mit Euren Antworten geben, werde ich mich bei Euch melden.

Geotope Aghios Pavlos (St. Paul)
Geotope is the geological component of the abiotic matrix present in an ecotope. Example geotopes might be: an exposed outcrop of rocks, an erratic boulder, a grotto or ravine, a cave, an old stone wall marking a property boundary, and so forth. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geotope)
The Greek island of Crete is located on a tectonically very active spot in the Mediterranean Sea, the subduction zone where the African slate is pushed under the European slate. Therefore this is the area of Europe with most earthquakes. Since the center of the quakes is rather deep, usually no major damages occur. The geotectonic movements lead to disturbances of the sedimental layers by foldings and faults.
In Aghios Pavlos you can see a geotope with unique rock formations which show the results of those movements (see foto)

You can get to the location of the EarthCache from the parking along the beach up a long stairway. You will shed more than the usual drop of sweat, especially during summer!

1. How many steps do you have to go up the stairway to reach the geotope?
2. How many feet above mean sea level is the visible base of the rock in the picture (+- 10 ft)?
(If you prefer to, you may give your answer in meters)
In addition make a picture of you in front of the rock and upload it together your log after approval.
BTW, EartchCaches can be honoured with a Favorite Point, too.
