Red Top Mountain State Park Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: “Georgia State Parks has decided to archive all of the existing caches on their current GeoTour. They will be launching a new updated GeoTour, that will be going live Monday February, 8th.

If you are still completing the old system, have no fear, you can still complete our old GeoTour while starting our new one. The stamps are no longer in the caches, however we printed out the corresponding letters and pasted them inside the new geocache boxes. Write these letters down on your old passport and email a picture to ParksRFun@dnr.ga.gov to receive the coins for the old GeoTour.”

Geocache Description:

Red Top Mountain State Park

Cache information:

Steward: Jeep02
Park: Red Top Mountain State Park
Cache type: Letterbox Hybrid
Coordinates: N 34º 08.863 W 084º 42.409
Difficulty: 2.5
Terrain: 2.5

Cache Description: You are looking for an ammo can located inside Red Top Mountain State Park. The hike to the cache is just under a mile one way. You can discover more than 15 miles of hiking trails in the park.

The coordinates listed above are for the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Red Top Mountain State Park. At this location you will have the option to either purchase an annual parking pass or pay the daily parking fee, unless of course you already have a valid annual parking pass. You may elect to pick up a map of the trails too.

After you have taken care of those tasks and you're ready to find the cache hike the Sweet Gum Trail. A short ways down the Sweet Gum Trail you will come to a fork. You will see two colored trail markings on the trees. Continue on following the green markings.

Follow this trail until you reach a paved path, now look to the left and you will spot the next part of the trail. After you cross the paved path, continue a short distance until you reach an old feeding area/small meadow or cleared area. Now start to look for the Campground direction signs.

When you've reached the second campground sign after the meadow, walk 173 feet at a heading of 245° and look for a small residential structure.

Count the number of vertical walls and add 1, call that Y. Now go on a heading of 2Y4° for 169 feet.

Here you will see a few 'rocks'. Look to a heading of 317° and walk 40 feet and you will see a boulder that is approximately 4 feet in diameter resting against a tree.

The cache will be 20 feet away on a heading of 270° from the boulder.

If you're not familiar with the compass feature on your GPS, you might want to bring a magnetic compass.

This cache is a "traditional" letterbox cache. You will find a ink pad and a unique stamp for this park that is used for stamping your passport. Please do not remove these items from the ammo can.

Enjoy your visit at the park and remember to re-hide the cache like or better than you found it and practice, "Leave No Trace." While visiting any Georgia State Park please remain on the marked trails as you make your way to find the ammo cans.

Georgia State Parks GeoTour:

Geocaching is an outdoor adventure game similar to a treasure hunt played with a GPS device. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, take a trinket from the cache, leave something of greater or equal value in return for the next person and then share your experiences online. There are over a million active geocaches around the world and now with the Georgia State Parks GeoTour you can “Get Out. Get Dirty. Get Fit.“ and go geocaching in Georgia state parks.

Steps to the Georgia State Parks GeoTour:

1. Obtain a Georgia State Park GeoTour PassPort from any park or historic site or download a PDF from GaParksGeocaching.com

2. Go to Geocaching.com create a log-in and find the GPS coordinates and more information for the Georgia State Parks GeoTour locations.

3. Start your search and locate one or all caches using a hand-held GPS unit. The cache containers are sealed ammo boxes labeled as a Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites geocache. Caches are located in 43 Georgia state parks and state historic parks.

4. When you find a GeoTour cache, log your name and any comments on the logbook inside the cache and stamp your PassPort grid sheet with the unique stamp for that specific park.

5. Be sure to follow the Leave No Trace guidelines –GeorgiaStateParks.org/LeaveNoTrace

6. Follow the Traveling Gophers. There are 58 Georgia State Park & Historic Sites TravelBugs® moving around the country. Click here to see where the travel gopher for this park is now. Be on the lookout for them and help them get to a new destination.

7. If you’re quick, there is a “First-to-Find” special prize.

8. Find one of the “endangered” gopher stuffed toys in 10 of the caches and it’s yours to keep and protect.

9. Complete specific numbers of caches to get a custom Geo-Coin. Bring your stamped PassPort into the park’s Visitor Center and receive a voucher for your coin.
