seldom|seen: Just seems to be too problematic to keep this one going. I truly appreciate all those who solved and found and even more so, all those who came away empty-handed because of maintenance issues. Thank you for taking the time to honor and participate in Earth Day caches!

Geocache Description:

Earthday celebrated its 40th birthday last week, an occasion marked by untold gatherings around the globe in many major metropolitan areas as well as in many small towns, just like the one that occurred right here, in Readstown Park on Saturday the 24th.

The event was well attended and well received and I suspect galvanized some to moving forward with personal green living goals o r local community environmental initiatives they hadn't considered previously. In fact, a community sculpture initiative was birthed right at the event.

There are volumes written about this particularly earth-centric celebration, it's origins with founder Gaylord Nelson, and the continuing efforts of the ever growing environmental movement to reduce our collective footprint on the earth. But, to digest 40 years of Earthday, distill it down and create a cache based on its voluminous history would simply not do it justice. For that you should take some time to explore the embedded links. I thought instead that I would focus on a single organization, one of many in the movement, that has done a great deal to preserve and protect the waters of Wisconsin, including the Kickapoo watershed, by watch-doging and challenging in court the power and resource brokers who threaten Wisconsin's resources in on the legal front. What was once called Wisconsin's Environmental Decade also celebrated it 40th Anniversary recently and it is worth taking a look at their legislative initiative history.

As their first decade of legislative effort came to a close, the founders of the organization realized it was going to take many more decades to address presssing environmental issues in the state. Today, after 40 years of hard fought legal battles, they are looking ahead to what needs to be accomplished in the next four decades and presented their goals for 2050 at the anniversary event. And so Environmental Decade became Clean Wisconsin. Below you will find a timeline of the significant legislative milestones Clean Wisconsin marked in their Anniversary issue of the Defender, now in its 40 volume. Clean Wisconsin's achievements are many, they are significant and they have impacted all of us in their reach.
