Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the “DCNR - Legacy of Conservation” Geocaching Trail (see “Related Web Page” link above). Collect all the Pennsylvania Legacy of Conservation cards – one from each of the 30 caches in the trail – and show them all at one of the validation centers to receive a Legacy of Conservation geocoin (non-trackable). This geotrail will be archived on June 30, 2013.

(Not "Ostrya" now - never really was (Ooops). Should have been "Carpinus".) The 805-acre Chapman State Park includes the 68-acre Chapman Lake on the West Branch of Tionesta Creek. Adjacent to state game lands and Allegheny National Forest, Chapman is an oasis of recreational facilities in a vast area of wilderness. The park name honors Dr. Leroy E. Chapman (1881-1967) of Warren. Dr. Chapman was a State Senator from 1929 to 1963 and was very active in civic affairs. Many community groups were instrumental in creating this popular state park. The first land for the park was acquired in 1949. A dam was constructed near the old earthen dam of the Bucher Mill Log Pond, which dates back to Bucher’s Mill that was built about 1849. Chapman State Park opened in 1951. Okay, on to the cache: From the parking coordinates near the lake, climb the sled riding hill. It is a short hike to the cache. Practice good caching techniques and don’t leave any trace of your hunt for the next geocacher (don’t follow any path that you might see off the trail leading towards the cache).
