Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the Trout Run bike trail just north of the entrance to the Trout Hatchery. You can ride the trail or just park close by at the Trout Hatchery. You are looking for a match stick container. BYOP

Update 2023: The nest to the east is no longer being used by the eagles. They moved to a nest out of range of camera. However, a new pair of eagles have taken over N1 just to the west of this location above the garage on the homeowners property. This tree was used from 2008 - 2012. Then the nest deteriorated and eventually disintegrated. A nest was rebuilt in this tree by Raptor Resource staff. The new eagles moved in during 2023. You should have a pretty good view of that nest from here.

Original Posting: This spot affords a nice view of an active eagle nest in the tree to the east. This new nest was built during the summer of 2015. The eagles had built a nest near here in 2013, but that one went down in a storm. During that year, we were not able to watch the eagles because they were no longer using the nest that had the webcam. Before the 2014 nesting season, a new webcam was placed above the new nest. The original nest that the pair of birds used is located to the west between the house and out building. In the summer, leaves may hide the nest and the young eagles may have grown up and already left the nest, or they may still reside in the area. The Trout Hatchery here provides easy meals. From mid February to June this nest is a very active and interesting site. The web camera above the nest records all the action and is the most viewed eagle webcam in the world!

The webcam allows us to literally have a bird’s eye view into the lives of the eagles. According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, "During the 2010 nesting season, the site recorded more than 325,000 unique visitors from 125 countries, and nearly 3.9 million site visits as viewers logged in repeatedly to check the progress of the three chicks hatched there in early April." You may view the eagle webcam at this website: Decorah Eagle Cam

UPDATE 2021: The eagles have built a new nest and are no longer using this nest. The new nest is reported to be on private property somewhere near Walmart. No cameras on it at this time. However, Raptor Resource still has a webcam up for the Decorah North nest, which is also on private property, so you can still get your eagle fix there! :)
