The following excerpt, about the start of the Leon-Saxville Library, was taken from their 50th anniversary commemorative calendar.

14-year-old Darlene Taylor got an idea for her Pine River Rainbows 4-H Junior Leader Project from her mother, Ruth Taylor. The idea for a library in Pine River came from Darlene Taylor (now Darlene Hempel) who got the idea from her mother Ruth Taylor. A library in Pine River! That would be an ambitious project, but Darlene, who had been very active in 4-H since the age of 9, took it on.

She presented her idea to the Town Board in 1959, and the library began to take shape. Darlene and her fellow Rainbows “advertised” for and collected books. The “library” opened in 1960, with Darlene as its first librarian. She made her first card catalogue, with each card containing only the title and the author’s name. There were no library cards. Darlene remained involved with the library until her graduation from high school in 1961.

Permission to hide the cache at this location was given by Jeanne L. Williamson, Library Director.
