Turn off Highway 5 at Wells Gray Info Center and head north 4.4 km on Clearwater Valley Road. Don't turn at Greer Road. Park at lot with Wood Lot Licence 301 sign on the left. Head down steep marked trail.
3CC is the third in a series of caches that start at the Triple Decker Falls trail off Clearwater Valley Road and continue along the Clearwater River Trail to Candle Creek Falls. The other two caches en route to 3CC are 3D and Opsrey VP. An additional 10” hike will take you to the banks of the Clearwater River. Watch for the deep square holes in the cedar tree made by Pileated Woodpeckers. The commercial rafting companies often pull in at the shore here and bring their clients up the trail for a trip behind Candle Creek Falls. Very cooling on a hot day!
One should allow at least two hours return to visit all three caches and be warned that this hike, while on a good trail, is very steep in sections. If you don’t have good knees and good footwear this hike is definitely not for you. Hiking poles are an asset and bear spray isn’t a bad idea either if your party is less than three people. While there has never been a case of a bear attacking a human in Wells Gray Park, this isn’t the park and there is always a first time where wild animals are concerned. If you take the trail all the way to Clearwater River you will have to deal with six long steep hills on return. After saying all that I’ve done the route a dozen times this year and I’m in my sixties.
