Vulkanit und Sandstein
Die Ruine der Burg Falkenstein thront auf einer Felskuppe über dem Falkensteiner Tal und überragt den gleichnamigen Ort. Aus geologischer Sicht befindet sich Falkenstein am Rande des Rhyolith-Massivs des Donnersbergs. Die Burgruine selbst hat einen Standort mit wahrlich feuriger Erdgeschichte, denn sie steht auf einem ehemaligen Vulkanschlot. Dieser wie auch das Donnersbergmassiv haben ihren Ursprung in der starken magmatischen Aktivität vor ca. 290 Mio. Jahren, der sogenannten Rotliegendzeit.
Das vulkanische Gestein des Burgberges ist ein Dazit. Dazite gehören zu den magmatischen Gesteinen. Es sind Ergussgesteine, die im wesentlichen aus den Mineralen Feldspat, Quarz, Amphibol, Biotit und wenig Pyroxen bestehen. Sie sind von der chemischen Zusammensetzung dem Rhyolith ähnlich, enthalten aber weniger Kalifeldspat. Dazite gehören zu den sauren Vulkaniten, im Gegensatz zu den kieselsäurearmen basischen Vulkaniten wie dem Basalt. Ihre Farbe ist meist grau bis bräunlich zu rötlich und sie zeigen oft ein sogenanntes porphyrisches Gefüge.

- Warum ragt der Burgberg aus seiner Umgebung heraus? (Vulkanschlot reicht nicht als Antwort!)
- Warum wurde die Burg aus Sandstein erbaut?
- Im Inneren der Burg befindet sich zwischen den großen Fenstern in der Außenmauer eine schwarze Metalltafel zur Geschichte der Burg. Wer stiftete sie?
So lange die Tafel verschwunden ist, findet Ihr hier ein Bild davon.
Macht bitte auf dem Burggelände ein Foto an eurer Lieblingsstelle. Es dürfen auch gerne mehrere sein. Ladet bitte diese(s) Foto(s) zu eurem Log hoch. Es wäre schön, wenn Ihr oder etwas von Euch auf dem Foto zu sehen wäre. Dies ist aber eine Bitte und keine Bedingung.

Volcanic rock und sandstone
The ruined castle of Falkenstein is enthroned on a clifftop above the Falkenstein valley and surmounts the village of the same name. From the geological point of view Falkenstein lies at the edge of the Rhyolith massif of the Donnersberg. The ruin itself has a location with a proverbial history of fire since it stands on an ancient vent of a volcano that has the same origin as the Donnersberg massif: The strong magmatic activity about 290 million years ago during the so called 'Rotliegendzeit'.
The volcanic stone of the castle rock is a dacite. Dacites belong to the magmatic stones. They are extrusive rocks that consist mostly of the minerals feldspar, quartz, amphibole, biotite and a bit of pyroxene. Regarding the chemical composition they are similar to rhyolith but contain less potash feldspar. Dacites belong to the acid volcanites in contrast to the less siliceous alkaline volcanites like basalt. Their color is mostly grey to brown or reddish and they often show a so called porphyritic structure.
Log conditions:
You will find a geological information board inside the castle ruins. It will give you further information of the volcanic history of the site and will help you answer the following questions. Please send us the answers to that questions through the mail function of our profile before logging and wait before we unlock you.

- Why does the castle rock stand up against its environment?
- Why has the castle been built of sandstone?
- Inside the castle there is a black metal plate between the big windows of the outer wall which shows the history of the castle. Who donated it?
As long as the plate is missing you will find a picture of it here.
