Standing the First Dog Watch (1600 to 1800) on the fantail of the USS Maddox (DD-731) gave me nothing but time to think. Looking out over the Gulf of Tonkin I thought about all of the other bodies of water that I had sailed on. Having sailed in waters all around the globe, the list was going to be huge. Just as I began my list I was interrupted by another Seaman who was there to relieve me of the watch. How time flies when your mind wanders. Listed below are all of the places that I had time to remember.
The Red Sea
The Japan Sea
The North Sea
The Okhotsk Sea
The Mediterranean Sea
The Baltic Sea
The Andaman Sea
The South China Sea
The Bering Sea
Solve for N44 3A.B0C W87 3W.XYZ
A = Andaman Sea - Japan Sea
B = Red Sea - South China Sea
C = Japan Sea - Mediterranean Sea
W = North Sea - South China Sea
X = Mediterranean Sea + North Sea
Y = Andaman Sea - Okhotsk Sea
Z = Baltic Sea - Bering Sea Sea
Are you a Land Lubber or an able bodied Seaman?
On August 2, 1964, the destroyer USS Maddox, while on patrol off the coast of Vietnam, was engaged by three North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats. A sea battle resulted, in which the Maddox expended over 280 3" and 5" shells. Strafing from four USN F-8 Crusader jet fighter bombers also occured. One US aircraft was damaged, one 14.5mm round hit the destroyer, 3 North Vietnamese torpedo boats were damaged, and 4 North Vietnamese sailors were killed with 6 wounded. There were no U.S. casualties.
