| In der Nähe des Ortes Reichenbach im Oberpfälzer Landkreis Cham mit seinem 1118 gegründeten Kloster Reichenbach liegt wunderbar der kleine Weiler Hochgart. Von dort aus führt ein schöner Wanderweg auf den Gipfel des Pfaffenstein mit seiner eindrucksvollen Felsformation.
Die eindrucksvolle Gipfelpartie des Pfaffensteins besteht aus einer wollsackverwitterten Granitkuppe mit mehreren aufliegenden riesigen Wollsackrundlingen. Als hätte ein Riese seine Murmeln vergessen, liegen hier einige gigantische runde Felsen herum. In der weiteren Umgebung finden sich zahlreiche weitere schöne wollsackverwitterte Granitfelsen. Der Gipfel, ein besonders schönes Beispiel für Granitverwitterung, ist als Naturdenkmal geschützt. Im Jahr 1984 wurde hier durch eine Initiative von Pater Exprovinzial Matthäus Heidenreich vom Kloster der Barmherzigen Brüder ein neues Holzkreuz errichtet. Einmal im Jahr findet ein Pilgermarsch zum Pfaffenstein mit anschließendem Gottesdienst statt.
Das Geotop ist unter der Nummer 372R056 im bayerischen Geotopkataster erfasst.

Close to the village of Reichenbach in the Upper Palatinate's district of Cham with it's in the year of 1118 founded Reichenbach Abbey is the little hamlet Hochgart. From there a beautiful hiking trail leads to the summit of the Pfaffenstein with it's impressive rock formation.
On the imposing summit of the Pfaffenstein you'll find huge spheroidal weathered granite rocks, looking like a giant's forgotten marbles. The whole area shows very nice examples for spheroidal weathering, giant rocks as well as man-deep cuts into the granite-rocks. Children will love the area, there a lot's of hide-outs to discover. The summit is protected as a natural monument. In the 1987 a new cross on the largest of the round rocks was errected on initiave of Father Matthäus Heidenreich of the monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers at Reichenbach Abbey. A yearly pilgrimage leads to the summit ending in an impressive worship near the rocks.

| Die Wollsackverwitterung ist eine besondere Form der Verwitterung von Gesteinen und hier auf dem Pfaffenstein ganz besonders gut zu beobachten. Durch das Zusammenwirken von physikalischen und chemischen Prozessen entstehen bei der Wollsackverwitterung kantengerundete Gesteinsblöcke, die wie Kissen oder eben wie Wollsäcke übereinander gestapelt liegen. Der bildliche Begriff "Wollsack" leitet sich dabei von mit Wolle gefüllten groben Säcken ab, die insbesondere historisch sowohl als Schlafunterlage als auch zum Transport von Wolle verwendet wurden. Grundlagen der Wollsack-Entstehung sind Verwitterungsprozesse an massiven Gesteinsmassen unterhalb der Bodenoberfläche. In der Regel entstehen im Laufe der Zeit oberflächennah Risse und Spalten im Gestein und damit grundsätzlich eckige Blöcke. Dieser Prozess wird als Klüftung bezeichnet. Die Risse im Gestein sind auf dem Pfaffensteig sehr gut zu sehen und zum Teil so groß, daß man darin gehen kann. In die Steine dringen daraufhin chemisch aggressive Lösungen ein (Regenwasser bzw. im Wasser gelösten Huminsäuren) und beginnen, die Minerale des Gesteins zu zersetzen. Das geschieht in erster Linie an den Ecken und Kanten der einzelnen Blöcke, da dort die Angriffsflächen größer sind als an den Seitenflächen. Dadurch werden spitze und kantige Stellen der Blöcke - wie am Pfaffenstein perfekt zu sehen - gerundet.
Ein möglicher Startpunkt für die Wanderung zum Pfaffenstein ist Hochgart. Es gibt hier keinen offiziellen Parkplatz, aber man kann das Auto problemlos an der Seite der Straße oder an der Wiese vor dem Wohngebäude abstellen. Vermutlich werdet ihr schon am Auto vom freundlichen Hofhund begrüsst. Rechts am Wohnhaus vorbei bis zum Waldrand, dort den rechten Weg nehmen und dann am nächsten Abzweig (siehe Wegpunkt) hoch zum Pfaffenstein. Auch eine Wanderung von Kolmberg im Süden ist problemlos möglich.

Spheroidal weathering is a type of chemical weathering that creates rounded boulders and helps to create domed monoliths. This should not be confused with stream abrasion, a physical process which also creates rounded rocks on a much smaller scale. A good example of spheroidal weathering can be found in the Alabama Hills area of eastern California. Spheroidal weathering occurs whenever a mass of rock (most typically granitic in composition), experiences a drastic reduction in ambient heat and pressure, such as when a batholith is exposed at the surface. Rock forms at great temperatures and pressures (760 °C and 300 MPa, for granitic rock), and in granites there are three mutually perpendicular sets of joints that develop when this overburden is removed. Two things cause this in granites: the quartz crystals expand about 5%, and acidic water attacks the feldspar minerals, turning them into clay. Thus the corners become rounded, because angular edges provide more than one area of attack by exposing a greater amount of surface area. Edges and especially corners of an angular block weather faster than flatter surfaces. The process of spheroidal weathering is slower than other common types of weathering such as frost wedging, and it becomes lower still at progressively lower temperatures which slow down the chemical process of feldspar breakdown. Thus many granitic mountain peaks are jagged and craggey instead of rounded.
A possible starting point for the hike to Pfaffenstein summit is Hochgart. The is no official parking site, but you can park your car beside the road or in front of the farmstead's lawn. Probably the friendly dog living here will come by to greet you. Pass the farmstead on the right and walk to the edge of the forest, take the right there and at the given waypoint take the left path to the summit. Of course it is also possible to approch the summit from Kolmberg in the south of the Pfaffenstein.

- Auf der Rückseite des mittleren Felsens wurde eine Vertiefung ca. 10 cm tief in den Fels geschlagen. Welche Form hat diese Vertiefung.
- Aus der Vertiefung ist ein Mineral ausgetreten und hat den Fels eingefärbt. Die Farbe lässt auf das Mineral schliessen, um welches Mineral handelt es sich?
- Unterhalb der felsformation finden sich die auf dem Bild gezeigten Wegweiser. Welcher Weg ist hier außer Weg 47 und 48 noch ausgeschildert?
