Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Decatur County Cemetery Series! This series will take you to every corner of Decatur County and in between to discover the cemeteries of today and long since past. Who knows; you might just find some long-lost lineage!

The townsite of Kanona was platted on June 26, 1885. It is unknown which building came first, but soon the town had two general stores, a lumberyard, blacksmith shop, livery barn, flour and feed business, and the Kanona House, a restaurant and hotel. The town suffered the depression of the 1890's, but saw a new boom when a larger lumberyard was built. The Kanona State Bank was opened on March 5, 1917. One of the first telephone lines in the county was put in between Kanona and Jennings in 1904. The town even boasted having three grain elevators. But the town soon began to fade away. There is little left of the old town. Cache is a camouflaged ammo can with "Official Geocache" markings.

This being a cemetery series, the utmost respect when entering and searching is imperative. None of the caches involve ANY desecration of graves or cemetery property, and none should be reported or this series will be disabled. All caches are relatively easy and require little searching or bushwhacking. If a funeral service is being held in the cemetery, DO NOT ENTER. We want you to be respectful not only to the 'residents' of the cemetery, but to the families. Just use your head and you should do just fine. Please, NO NIGHT CACHING. Many of these cemeteries have curfews from dusk to dawn.
