Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Decatur County Cemetery Series! This series will take you to every corner of Decatur County and in between to discover the cemeteries of today and long since past. Who knows; you might just find some long-lost lineage!

The first buildings of Jackson were a church and school were built of sod, but in 1889, a frame school was built. The post office was open from 1879 to 1889, and the town once boasted 60 residents. The Jackson Mill, completed in 1873, was a 30x40 three story building. The mill had a daily capacity of 40 barrels, and was water powered. The mill was built by Jeramiah Rose. A dam was placed across the creek to help power the mill, but in the case of the dam breaking, a steam engine would power the mill. Unfortunately, the mill burned down when the hot coals of the steam engine caused a fire. One story tells of a party carrying gold from Colorado, who were attacked by outlaws. One of the men in the party went ahead to bury the gold, but they were all killed. No gold was ever found. Cache is a small matchstick container

This being a cemetery series, the utmost respect when entering and searching is imperative. None of the caches involve ANY desecration of graves or cemetery property, and none should be reported or this series will be disabled. All caches are relatively easy and require little searching or bushwhacking. If a funeral service is being held in the cemetery, DO NOT ENTER. We want you to be respectful not only to the 'residents' of the cemetery, but to the families. Just use your head and you should do just fine. Please, NO NIGHT CACHING. Many of these cemeteries have curfews from dusk to dawn.
