Geocache Description:

Johnson Farm

This cache is placed in 2011 to honor the 100th anniversary of Devil's Lake State Park.

Centennial Tracks is a hiking tour that highlights the human history of the park. See what evidence remains from the early inhabitants of the Devil's Lake area. If time allows, visit the Devil's Lake Nature Center to pick up the printed brochure with maps and historic pictures of the 12 points of interest in this series. GPS units are available for use (FREE) at the Nature Center. Visit at least 8 locations and receive a Centennial Wooden Nickel and the coordinates to a hidden final cache. Have fun and GET OUTDOORS WISCONSIN!

Windmill at the Johnson farm

Abraham Lezeart settled in this area in 1851. In the 1860's he was joined by his relatives, George and Laney Lezeart Johnson who moved here from Canada to grow hops. At that time the most sought after hops for the brewing industry were those grown in the Baraboo area. Unfortunately, a poor crop in 1868 and a louse infestation devastated the hops industry. Many growers were ruined and moved on, but the Johnson family continued farming here for many years until Archie Johnson sold the land to the state in 1973.

All that remains now is the windmill and the cistern that the Johnsons dug by hand in 1919. The windmill pumped water uphill to the cistern that was located at the top of the terminal moraine. The house, located down among the pine trees, had running water before it had electricity!

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to and approved by Steven Schmelzer of the Wisconsin DNR. A State Park sticker is required for all parked vehicles. Leashed pets are welcome.
