Geocache Description:

Commonwealth Avenue, referred to as Comm Ave stretches from the western edge of Boston Public Garden, through the neighborhoods of the Back Bay, Kenmore Square, Allston, Brighton and Chestnut Hill. It continues through Newton until it crosses the Charles River at the border of the town of Weston.

This series of caches takes you along the greenway, called Commonwealth Avenue Mall which is punctuated with statuary and memorials. After the first cache and continuing past the statue of John Glover you will come to the statue of Patrick Andrew Collins, former mayor of Boston, sculpted by Henry Hudson Kitson and Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson. Prior to reaching your next stop The Vendome Memorial you will find the second placed cache.

The Hotel Vendome fire was the worst firefighting tragedy in Boston history as 9 firefighters were killed when part of the building collapsed, June 17, 1972. The Vendome was a luxury hotel built in 1871 and massively expanded in 1881. The hotel was located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street.

On June 17th, 1997, the 25th anniversary of the Vendome fire, a monument was dedicated on the Commonwealth Avenue mall, a few yards from the site of the fire. The monument features a fireman's helmet and coat cast in bronze draped over a low arc of dark granite. An inscription bears the timeline of the fire and the names of the men who died. When reading the names on the memorial you will be facing the corner Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street, the site of The Vendome.

Please be aware of muggles as they are everywhere. Please replace as you found it.
