Geocache Description:

Fort Waddell is a Pennsylvanian frontier fort located on route 30 west of St. Thomas. Thomas Waddell owned the plantation that the Fort was located on.

Thomas Waddell was born in what was then Peters Township on Christmas Day 1772. His parents were William Waddell and Elizabeth Stockton. He served in the famous "Whiskey Rebellion" or Dorr War, of 1794, and later as a General in the War of 1812. He owned a large tract of land about three miles east of Mercersburg, and built there a large and substantial dwelling. He married Catherine Long on April 20, 1796 at the West Conococheague Presbyterian Church by Rev. John King. Together they had one child they named for Thomas' mother Elizabeth (b. 1801) . He is listed as a county auditor in 1822 & 1824. Thomas Waddell died on June 23, 1852 and was burried in Church Hill Graveyard, Peters Twp, Franklin, Pennsylvania.
