Der Wettlauf zum Südpol

The South Pole, also known as the Geographic South Pole or Terrestrial South Pole, is one of two points where Earth's axis of rotation intersects its surface. It is the most southern point on Earth surface and lies on the opposite side of the Earth from the North Pole. Situated on the continent of Antarctica, it is the site of the United States Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, which was established in 1956 and has been permanently maned since then.

100 years ago a dramatic race took place at the back of beyond. The Royal Navy Officer Robert Falcon Scott (1868 - 1912) and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen (1872 - 1928) had the same dream: for her country to conquer the South Pole. On different routes they tried to reach this aim and, besides, risked their life.
On the 14th of December, 1911 the Norwegian Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole. Together with four companions he had struggled on completely unexploited ways through the Antarctic ice, numerous deep glacier columns and yawning abysses had overcome.

Hundred years after the conquest of the South Pole two teams from Germany and Austria have gone in Antarctic to the start.
The German Team consists of extreme sportsman Joey Kelly, Air Force Officer Dennis Lehnert, marathon runner Claudia Beitsch and ZDF presenter Markus Lanz. They start against the Austrian team ski legend Hermann Maier (also as "a Herminator" famously), ORF presenter Tom Walek , Alex Serdjukov und Sabrina Grillitsch.
For me it is not allowed to say which of these both teams won but from March, 2011 the German and Austrian Television will show in a fifth-hasty documentary row the "
race to the South Pole".
Anyhow I am especially grateful, that Dennis has carried my little cash container over 400km through the everlasting ice and the researcher Team of the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station (especially Robert Schwarz) who made it possible to place and maintain the cache over there.
So, now it´s your turn to set out for the South Pole!
If you reach the Pole have a look for a pole which doesn´t grow there usually ;P
There are a lot of restrictions on the Antarctica - you have to be well informed!
