NMEA kirjainyhdistelmä on tuttu monelle GPS-käyttäjälle. Se on lyhenne sanoista 'National Marine Electronics Association' ja tarkoittaa vapaasti suomennettuna kansallista merielektroniikkayhdistystä. Yhdistyksen on perustanut joukko elektroniikan jälleenmyyjiä, jotka New Yorkin venenäyttely toi yhteen vuonna 1957. Sen alkuperäisenä tarkoituksena oli parantaa suhteita ja yhteydenpitoa alan valmistajien kanssa. Yhteistyön tuloksena syntyi alalle oma yhtenäinen rajapinta 80-luvun alkupuolella. NMEA tarjoaa siis standardoidun rajapinnan tiedon välittämiseen ja monet GPS laitteet ovat perinteisesti tukeneet tätä tiedonsiirtotapaa. Standardissa on ASCII viestit esim. ajan, leveyspiirin, pituuspiirin ja korkeuden merenpinnasta välittämiseen. Myös monelle muulle GPS:lle tyypilliselle tiedolle on omat viestinsä.

IN ENGLISH:
NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) is a well known abbreviation among GPS users. The association has been founded back in the 1957 by a group of electronic dealers who got together at the New York Boat Show. The original purpose was just to strengthen relationships and improve communication with manufactures. As a result of collaboration only uniform interface was created back in the early eighties. NMEA provides a standard for digital data exchange between different products and is supported by many GPS devices. There are standard ASCII messages to deliver e.g. time, latitude, longitude and altitude information, but also wide range of other GPS specific information.
