The temple used to be called Tepayapli or Wat Chimpli. It is assumed that the temple was built in the reign of King Buddha Loetlanbhalai In the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Phraya Choduekratchasetthi (Thian Chotigsatian), when he was Pharayanoranath Phakdi and Khung Ying Sun (his wife) donated money to restore the temple by building ubosot, minister, sermon hall, stupa and monk houses.
