Geocache Description:

Placed on Sumas Mountain, near the recently restored Friendly Cabin!

The Friendly Cabin was built in the late 1800s by John Friendly. After the area was logged, (and the previous cache archived) It was nicely restored by the Backcountry Horseman and renamed "Sumas Mountain Outpost". Other additions included a flag, a large corral, and a privy (complete with a moon on its door ). A nice before/after photo I found can be seen here.

You can get to the cache by hiking up the Sumas Mountain Trail. Park at the end of Sealund Rd (off of South Pass Rd) and follow the fenceline through the mud. I advise weiring waterproof boots, as this is extremely muddy year round. Continue along the trail for a mile, until you reach an obvious split at the edge of a clearcut (N 48 55.024 W 122 14.979). Left will take you directly to the cabin (and cache) in about .25 mi. Right will loop around to the mines before also going to the cabin.

I don't yet know the policy for the cabin, but when I peeked in it, I saw a nice hand drawn trail map of the mountain, a bunch of supplies and tools, and beds. In case there are people staying there, you don't need too get close to retrieve the cache. Great views west over the county! If you'd like to continue up the mountain, just follow the logging road, and signs should direct you to the main trail.

If you know anything else about the cabin please tell me in your logs! The cache is a small Lock-and-Lock.

Have fun, and HAPPY HUNTING!!!
