Geocache Description:

Small cache at the location of the long-since overgrown & forgotten Raymond Park

From the Genesis of Girard, published 1993...
"PICNICS
...Just outside Girard, to the east, along the streetcar line, Raymond Park was developed about 1908. It also had a pavilion where entertainments were held. The boy violinist Robert Moore played there in 1908.

In 1920 Booth Park was dedicated 3 miles west of Girard, & was a popular picnic spot for several years. It is likely that the groves which later became Raymond Park & Booth Park were used unofficially as picnic sites from the time the county was settled...

RAYMOND PARK
Mary E. Raymond gave the 160-acre wooded tract 1 mile east of town to the City of Girard in 1931. It was already known as "Raymond Park" because in 1909 the Raymonds made a 10-year contract with the Girard Coal Belt Electric Railway (streetcar line) for the development of a park to be known by their name. The company was obligated to erect or remove buildings, keep up fences & cut weeds at least once a year. Intoxicating liquor could not be sold on the grounds. According to the terms of Mr Raymond's will, voters could accept or reject the gift of the park. In April 1931 an election was held, & the park was accepted.

Some over-enthusiastic advocates of a municipal golf course, dance pavilion & swimming pool may have hindered the passage of the issue, but it passed, & a number of men of the community cut brush & made the area more presentable"

The cache is a small container hidden about 200 yds from the parking area. The city does mow here occasionally but it has the potential for getting quite overgrown (sadly, the Girard Coal Belt Electric Railway company is no longer around to take care of things...). Long pants & bug spray is recommended!

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: This area floods regularly so in order to prevent the cache container from leaking &/or getting washed away, I need your help...
Please make sure the top is screwed onto the container tightly & that it is tucked securely back into its hiding spot, which SHOULD be high enough to be above the water level when the creek floods.
THANK YOU!!
