The Grotto Gardens at Rudolph, WI are a lasting memorial to the faith and devotion of one man, Father Philip J. Wagner.
While at the Grotto at Lourdes, France in 1912, Father Wagner promised to build a shrine to Our Lady if his prayers for better health were answered. Successfully recovered, the shrine's construction began in 1928.
Born in Iowa in the year 1882 to pioneer parents, the future Father Wagner became a hardworking farm boy, but one with dreams of traveling. He entered school at Prairie Du Chien, WI at the age of 21 and began studies for the priesthood, which eventually led him to Rudolph.
Father Wagner ended his world travels in 1917 to become pastor at the village of Rudoph. This became his home for the rest of his life. The Grotto Gardens became his life work...a labor of love and devotion.
With little mechanical help, the painstaking task of developing the Grotto Gardens began. As you reflect on the amazing amount of effort that has gone into the Grotto Gardens, you will understand and appreciate what a total tribute to God it is.
We hope your visit to the 7.5 acres of the Grotto Gardens will be pleasurable and inspirational.
