This is part of our SCHS (Story County High Schools) Cache Series as a tribute to the seven school districts in our fine county.
Velkommen til Roland! You are in Norsemen Country! The community of Roland and nearby Story City make up the Roland-Story School district, home of the Norsemen. Their colors are red and black. The HS is located in Story City and the MS here in Roland. Each town has an elementary school of their own.
This district's claim to fame is tied to native son Gary Thompson. Many of you that are Iowa State basketball fans may have been around to see him play but those who aren't as ancient will know him as the TV color commentator for Cyclone Basketball. He is nicknamed "The Roland Rocket," which is a glimpse at the past history of the district before these two schools consolidated. Roland was formerly the Rockets and Story City used the Vikings for their nickname.
