Geocache Description:

This should be an easy smiley.

* * * NOTE: "The landscape in this area has changed a lot.
When I visited to replace the missing cache, I couldn't find a decent hiding place.
The original coords will still get you there,
but since the idea behind this cache was to get you off the beaten track to a locale
with beautiful views and not necessarily to challenge you with the hide,
I decided to put the cache container in a very obvious location.
You'll find two items to sign -- a guest book and the cache.
So that I know you signed the cache log,
you must send me the code phrase printed inside the lid of the cache container.
If I don't receive that code phrase, your log will be deleted! * * *

This location was discovered by Puttzy while heading home on his motorcycle last fall. He urged me to visit the site, since he knows how much I like these locations. I visited shortly after that, and placed the cache. Then snow hit before I had a chance to do anything further. I finally had a chance to revisit the location to be sure all is well with the cache -- and now it can be posted.

The sign says "Historic Hill Cemetery," but I found this location on the internet as McAlevy's Fort Hill Cemetery. It's the final resting place for General William McAlevy, a daring frontiersman who played an important role in the development of this area. You can also find the stone of William Johnson, a survivor of Crawford's Defeat, an Indian attack occurring near the end of the Revolutionary War in 1782.

The terrain for this cache may remind you of my Trcziyulny cache, although on my last visit to Historic Hill I was able to drive a bit closer. The locale reminds me of one of my favorite caches of this type, Benner Cemetery, in MattressGnome's Centre County series. It's a very small, but very picturesque cemetery, with a wonderful panoramic 360 degree view. You'll want to bring a camera with you, and I'd love to see more photos posted here! I'd especially like to see a photo of William Johnson's stone, since mine was inadvertently deleted!

Use caution on the road through the field. I imagine it can be a bit difficult to drive after a hard rain. If your vehicle has low clearance, you may want to park and walk the entire distance. And as always, be respectful of the site. In addition to signing the log book for the cache, you can sign the visitor's book which you'll find easily. Please take some time to explore the stones as well. There's some really interesting history here that I hope to one day have time to investigate more fully.
