The Green County Barn Quilts project started in 2008, and by the
end of 2010 the 100th barn quilt was installed. Barn quilts are
painted wooden squares (designed like one block of a real quilt
pattern), generally 8 x 8 feet in size. Some are located on
"working" barns, and others are displayed on "retired" barns. It's
not as challenging as geocaching, but hunting for the barn quilt
locations is a true adventure in experiencing the roads less
traveled of the Green County countryside.
The farm has been in the family for more than 125 years. The
location of the farm house was originally a hotel. The quilt
pattern "Covered Bridge" was chosen in honor of Rebecca's
grandfather. In the old days in winter time, his job was to haul
snow onto the nearby Clarence Covered Bridge to allow horse-drawn
sleds to pass through it (since the bridge was covered, the snow
would not fall on the driving surface). A replica of this bridge is
on the Sugar River State Trail.
