It takes a sharp eye to spot this poorly marked Trail. This awesome spot is located on the North side of the Trans-Canada highway about 40km east of Revelstoke. This trail may be closed in the spring as it is also used by black and grizzly bears, please respect this closure. Here and there along the trail, park staff have inserted other worldly-looking metal icons to mark poins of interest. This short trail winds through the boulders of a Paleolithic landslide with occasional views of nearby mountain peaks that, park officials say, landed on top of a glacier and where then deposited in their present location. If you need to stretch your legs on a long car trip, this trail is a perfect choice. Wear hiking boots or runners, as the trail winds through rough, uneven terrain. The trail starts on a boardwalk, which leads you through a forest filled with hemlock and Douglas fir to a directional arrow. Head right (north) at the arrow through the wet montane forest. You’ll pass through a rocky section, eventually climb up and over the large boulders, and briefly overlook the highway before looping back to the directional arrow. At 500 meters you’ll enjoy a great view to your right (south) of Mount Bonney (3,107 m) and the Bonney Glacier as well as Eagle Mountain (2,850 m), Mount Uto (2,911 m), and Mount Sir Donald (3,277 m) straight ahead (east). The Rock Garden trail is a new trail that wanders through a 1000's years old rock avalanche. You need good footwear for this trail - over rocks and boulders. Approx 1.0km hilly trail. The trail leads through black and grizzly bear habitat, and up to a viewpoint overlooking glaciers and the mountain barrier of Rogers Pass. The Rockgarden Trail offers a rustic and primitive experience. It is a single file trail with rock staircases, stepping stones, slippery and steep sections and sharp cliff faces. You will need footwear appropriate for backcountry-style hiking and to watch your footing. Keep children under your strict control. The Rockgarden trail is not recommended for pets.
