1st Annual International Geocaching Day- Illinois Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Corp Of Discovery: Time to archive this one.

Despite rather gloomy beginnings, the day turned out to be pretty nice by the time it was over. On the way up I had a few calls about whether I was planning on going ahead with things due to the inclement weather. I replied in the affirmative since I figured there'd be at least a few fellow nuts willing to brave things- turned out I was right.[:P]

Thanks to all those who attended and made it thru the storms.[:)]

Special thanks to the McHenry County Conservation District for letting us use their facilities.[8D] If you'd like to thank them directly, here's a link to the online way of contacting them.

Extra special thank go out to Stephanie of the MCCD for making it all happen.[^]

Hope to do this again next year- cya then.

Geocache Description:

An event celebrating the 1st International Geocaching Day!

Groundspeak has designated the 3rd Saturday in August as International Geocaching Day. Come celebrate it from 11am-4pm on Saturday, August 20th. This will be a rather casual event so be prepared to just relax and commiserate with fellow cachers.

In addition to the usual shelter, grill, bathrooms and water fountain there are basketball courts, volleyball courts, Frisbee golf, horseshoe pits (all for use on a first come/first use basis) and a fishing pond available nearby. I think there may also be a baseball field too.

The main part of the event is from 11am-3pm. Time for meeting & greeting, games, eating and what have you. Food and drink (no alcohol allowed, per location rules) will need to be on a 'bring your own' basis. An extra grill (or two) might come in handy as I'm not sure how many are on site. If anyone would like to organize any other activities, please feel free, but I ask that you run it by me so that I'm aware of it and can add it to the cache page as/if necessary.

The 2nd part of the event is from 3-4pm. That's time to help clean up the general area around the shelter and expanding out from there. This part is to help pay back the McHenry County Conservation District for the use of the facility, which they have graciously donated for free! This is a great way to build a positive relationship with them!

I'll be adding updates to the cache page as needed and will send corresponding announcements.

I'd like to make special mention of the great help that reviewer Electric Mouse and Stephanie from the MCCD were in getting this event going- your help is greatly appreciated!

Please take note: location has changed and it's a good distance from where it was originally going to be!
