We found this waterfall completely by chance while hiking to
Lilypad Pond from Putnam Pond Campground late summer of 2010. The
water first drops straight down into a large pool, then spills over
a ledge before continuing downstream. Words don't do it justice, so
you'll have to go if you want to see it. :-)
There are two ways to get here, both involving roughly 7-8 miles
of moderately easy hiking. Option A: Take the Short Swing Trail
from Rt. 74 to Lilypad Pond, then take the trail towards Rock Pond.
There is a well defined herd path leading to the falls from the
trail. Option B: Start from Putnam Pond Campground ($6 entrance fee
in season) and follow the trail around Rock Pond. On the west
shore, take the trail towards Lilypad Pond. The herd path mentioned
above will be a Right turn off the trail, at the bottom of a
descent. (This is a fantastic hike, but get a map from the entrance
gate, because there are lots of trails looping around the
area.)
The cache is a small tupperware container, suitable for small
trades. There are various knickknacks in there now, including a
waterfall loving Geocoin we picked up in Montana, for which we
created this cache. Tree cover made getting coordinates difficult,
but they should be pretty close. You don't need to climb the falls
to find the cache. Do be careful poking around, as footing can be
difficult. We highly recommend following the trails to the falls
then searching for the cache vs bushwhacking a straight line.
Enjoy!
