And now . . . a little bit about this specific cache you will be finding. This fruit is grown on a tree that is in the rose family. It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits. This fruit is the official state fruit of New York, West Virginia, Washington and Rhode Island. It is the official state flower of Michigan.
This fruit floats because 25 percent of its volume is air.
The tree originated in Western Asia, where its wild ancestor, the Alma, is still found today. There are more than 7,500 known varieties of this fruit.
At least 55 million tons of this fruit were grown worldwide in 2005, with a value of about $10 billion. China produced about 35% of this total. The United States is the second-leading producer, with more than 7.5% of world production. Iran is third, followed by Turkey, Russia, Italy and India.
