This cache is located on the original Mormon Trail as well as the
Hastings Cutoff used by members of the Donner Party.
In 1845 Lansford Hastings published a guide entitled The Emigrant's
Guide to Oregon and California. The guide described a "shortcut" to
California by leaving the main trail at Fort Bridger, traveling
southwest to the Great Salt Lake and across the salt flats, around
the south end of the Ruby Mountains and then meeting up with the
main California Trail west of present day Elko, Nevada.
In 1846 the Donner Party along with three other emigrant groups
took this route to California. The first three groups made it to
California safely. Unfortunately, the Donner Party was not as lucky
and ultimately ended up stranded in the Sierra Nevada during the
winter of 1846-47.
During the summer of 1847 the vanguard company led by Brigham Young
passed by this spot on their way to the Great Salt Lake Valley. As
you are at this cache location, just imagine leading a wagon down
this canyon. Remnants of the original trail are still present at
this location.
This cache has been placed by members of the Oregon-California
Trails Association. The mission of this organization is "to protect
the Historic Emigrant Trails legacy by promoting research,
education, preservation activities and public awareness of the
trails, and to work with others to promote these causes." For more
