Geocache Description:

Kruger Woods- Greg Pitman operated a gravity fed maple syrup farm that had maple sap flowing over the falls in the spring. (ok, I made that part up, but there was a syrup operation on a nearby slope)

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE ABOVE COORDINATES Coordinates are for parking.

Look out on to the river you will see the remains of the Point Pleasant-Bryam Bridge destroyed for the last time in 1955 flood. Kugler Woods provided timber for the famous Rodham Boat Works at the edge of the property. Here the Durham boats were built to haul lime from Easton, upriver. The lime was used for agriculture and the building trades, but the boats were also used by General George Washington in 1776, for the historic Christmas crossing downstream at Washington's Crossing. This large block of woodlands provides critical habitat for neo-tropical songbirds that need deep forest areas to breed. Vernal ponds on the property provide habitat for numerous rare plants including Wild Comfrey, Missouri Gooseberry, and the Hairy Lip Fern. The woodlands are also habitat for the long-tailed salamander and other wildlife including turkeys, hawks, owls.

The "trail" leads to waterfalls in season, see photos There are 2 ways to approach the cache. Both ways have a high terrain rating, but choose the wrong trail and the terrain rating is very, very high. A few people will be able to read the following cache coordinates on sight:

this just in: Hunterdon's Hidden Waterfall This beautiful waterfall is hidden away at the end of a short - but steep- quarter mile trail in the Kugler Woods Preserve (part of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park). The Hunterdon Land Trust helped preserve this property and now we have made access to this gem easier. With the help of volunteers, we widened the trail near a steep drop-off and extended it to the base of the waterfall's pool. In the near future the land trust will also be adding a kiosk and informational materials to the trail head, so this waterfall won't stay hidden for long. You can learn more about the Kugler Woods Preserve and download a map guide on our website. 8/2012
