Geocache Description:

The Brickey River which empties into Dungarvan Bay. The walk that will take you to the cache is flat, appropriate footwear should be worn, as it will get muddy following wet spells.

The walk to the cache is part of a circuit which will take you northwest from where you can park your car (52 04 425, 007 40 734) along a section of the brickey river. The full walk may be viewed at the following address: (visit link)

The Brickey River is known to locals as the canal and you can see why, you will be walking along a towpath.
The river was dredged as far as Knockmaun Castle in the 19th Century as part of a proposed canal which was to connect with the Blackwater, but the project was never finished.

Knockmaun Castle is the end of this section of the trail. This Castle was owned by Sir Richard Osbourne in the 15th Century. It was totally destroyed by Cromwell in 1650 before he entered Dungarvan. The River derives its name from the O'Brics who were chieftains to the Deise, the Deise being a tribe who made settlements here around 300BC.

The riverbank has an excellent vegetation of Alder, Willow, Sally etc. Interesting bird life includes Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Long-tailed Tit and occasionally Green Sandpiper. This morning, as i lay the cache, there were swans and egrets fishing the river and brown trout swimming in the clear water.

If you walk the trail from the gps position given, you will pass West Waterford Golf Club on the other side of the Brickey. The course was designed by Eddie Hackett and is a wonderful and challenging parkland course. A number of holes and fairways are close to you on the trail, so be respectful to golfers if they are lining up shots. Just in case i am playing a round, watch out and keep your head covered!!!!

The cache is a small tupperware container and everything contained is in a ziplock bag.It is located aprox three quarters of a mile from the parking co-ordinates. There is tree cover about so the position was hard to get but i averaged it to about 3 feet. Stay low and watch out for a barbed wire, GZ is the trail side of it, but just to be aware. Please sign and date it.

The trail is close to the river and there is a sharp drop if you are unlucky enough to fall. Its an ideal walk for a family, but maybe not stroller friendly.

And to our shame, while the walk is beautiful, watch out for the "irish obstacle course" - dog muck. slalom as much as you like, but be aware of it. Irish dog owners don't poop scoop in general.

Please enjoy your visit.
