A Wave to AIDS Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Flintstone4: We have tried to re-hide several times now but this location is just too tough to maintain. Too muggle heavy. We sadly must let this one go now.

Geocache Description:

The Vancouver AIDS Memorial is a beautiful metal wave sculpture overlooking the appropriately named Sunset Beach in Vancouver’s West End. Its position allows those who visit to read the names of friends who have died or simply reflect on the passage of time and seasons in the sometimes ragged rhythms of life.

The Vancouver AIDS Memorial was a project undertaken by the now defunct Vancouver AIDS Memorial Society. The concept took form in the mind of Dr Joss de Wet who, in 1994, was medical director of the former Normandy House Hospice that provided end of life care for women and men living with AIDS. The idea was pitched to Ed Lee, then the Chair of AIDS Vancouver. Ed championed it for the next 10 years.

A public art competition for it's design was held in 1996, fundraising began in 2001 and the memorial itself was officially unveiled on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2004.

The memorial holds just a fraction of the names of people whose lives were lost to this disease - 996 names of women and men are memorialized here. Please take a minute to look on the memorial and perhaps remember the people you know who were taken by this horrible epidemic that continues today worldwide.

The cache is a small, camo'd container. Please re-hide well and use stealth - VERY high muggle area.
