An easy cache for a snowshoer. If there is a lot of snow, You might have to dig a bit.
Helppo kätkö lumikenkäilijälle. Jos lunta on paljon, voit joutua kaivelemaan hieman.
Lepus americanus (Snowshoe rabbit)
The snowshoe rabbit (Lepus americanus) is a species of hare found in North America. It has the name "snowshoe" because of the large size of its hind feet and the marks its tail leaves. The animal's feet prevent it from sinking into the snow when it hops and walks. Its feet also have fur on the soles to protect it from freezing temperatures.
In these woods You will hardly meet a snowshoe rabbit. It is more obvious, that if You happen
to meet a rabbit here, it is a mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) which is a hare, largely adapted to polar and mountainous habitats here in Fennoscandia.
The only connection with a snowshoe rabbit and this cache is, that the cache can easily be found also in the winter and especially by a snowshoer.
The container holds logbook, pencils, a sharpener and FTF - prize.
Lepus americanus (Lumikenkäjänis)
Lumikenkäjänis (Lepus americanus) on Pohjois Amerikassa esiintyvä jänislaji. "Lumikenkä" -nimensä se on saanut leveistä takakäpälistään ja pitkän häntänsä jättämästä jäljestä. Leveät takakäpälät estävät pupujussia uppoamasta sen hypellessä pehmeällä hangella. Käpälissä on myös erityisen tuuha karvoitus kylmyyttä vastaan.
Näissä metsissä siis tuskin törmäät lumikenkäjänikseen. Ilmeisempää on, että jos näissä metsissä jänikseen törmäät, se onkin kotoinen metsäjäniksemme (Lepus timidus) joka on laajalti levinnyt yli koko Fennoskandian.
Lumikenkäjäniksen ja tämän kätkön ainoa yhtäläisyys onkin, että kätkö on löydettävissä helposti myös talvella ja silloin erityisesti lumikengin varustautuneena.
Kätkössä on loki, kyniä, teroitin ja FTF palkinto.
