Geocache Description:

2013 Late Winter: Use the hints. In spite of a couple checks and maintenance every week throughout the winter, the first day of spring has snow covering or plows taking out almost all the eighty reflectors along the 2 mile route. Longer temporary stakes still mark the start and finish, but almost all the turn tacks, and all but a few along the course were not visible again overnight. So, use the hints. There are turns at all the intersections you come to, and, after the first turn, the next two are T's with right turns. The final is more like 2.5 terrain now, but the cache is still doable.

4/21/12: With enthusiastic feedback on the extended course, the short course tacks are disappearing. I suppose someone could accidentally find it, but they would miss out on the expanded fun. Use the hint to make a turn a couple hundred feet from the start for the new route.

Flashlight Optional means this night cache is doable without a flashlight, at least till the last few feet. Here's how it came about, followed by how to do it:

I've been looking for a good spot for another night cache for a couple of months, spending a fair amount of time in some wet and wild places, and running into Dave doing maintenance on his caches. Along the Edge has been liked a lot and is in a great spot like some others I've been looking at and waiting for the right time or season, but I also wanted to put one a little closer to town so caching families can get to it easier with the younger members of their team. It was actually Dave who suggested this idea and location, since a lot of the other spots close to town are too bright or crowded. This area was a great fit for a little different style of night cache. Some of what I've been hearing about the FTF part of the game went into giving some who haven't gotten one, at least for a while, or a younger cacher their first. When Dave pared back on the FAD thing he enjoyed seeing a lot of others get their first FTF.

This is kind of a road night cache that can be done in the warm comfort of your car, with your kids, on a cold or snowy night, at least until the last sixty feet. Should be fun in the summer too, even then it's still a very quiet neighborhood. So far, even during daytime visits, I only ran into people walking dogs on these streets, and saw eagles flying over and even perched in one of the lone hickory trees along the course. Here's how you find the cache:

Go to the given coordinates for the listing and look for three white reflectors in a line about three feet off the ground. Proceed in a direction opposite that the tacks are facing, looking for similarly placed single or double tacks (high summer grasses and even higher winter snows in some winters have created high and low pairs throughout the course). There may even be the appearance of triples due to other reflecting spots, but the course is laid out with tacks spaced at least six to a hundred feet or so apart and is about 2.0 miles in length.

Follow the trail. If you find a gap, use the hint, not the paf (but stay on the road).

Three white tacks in the same configuration as the starting tack pattern mark the final location. The hide is about sixty feet northeast of those tacks. A flashlight will help with the find of the well-camo'd final, but it is a small after all. Hints were added with the loss of the snow geotrail for the extended tack track to help keep this one a pretty quick stop.

Please replace the cache and camo very gently, and have fun with this little twist on the night cache adventure.

Congratulations to LegoBoyblue for his very first FTF at this hide on January 31, 2012!
