Geocache Description:

Magnetic micro, BYOP. Not wheelchair accessible. May require a reach. It was difficult to get consistent satellite readings, even after averaging over time; the cache is not in the street, not behind any walls or fences, and not inside any structures. Recommended before or after business hours.

Ocean View was the name given to the unincorporated town beside the Bay, the area now known as West Berkeley. The original settlement began as a stage coach stop along Contra Costa Road (now San Pablo Avenue) in the 1850's and was mainly an industrial, working class community.

In addition to the stage route (and later the railroad), Ocean View had a wharf at the foot of Delaware Street, known as Jacobs Landing, later Jacobs and Heywood Wharf after the men who built and enlarged it. In addition to the shipping of goods, ferry service to San Francisco began in 1874.

When Berkeley incorporated in 1878, Ocean View became a part of the new town and was one of the Bay Area's principal industrial zones up until the 1960's. As industries began moving out of the area, there were efforts to redevelop the area, and the Ocean View name was revived as part of the movement to preserve the old Victorian neighborhood. As a result, the area has had a renaissance, notably around the Fourth Street area.

This cache is in a high muggle area. Use appropriate stealth to preserve it for future cachers.
