Geocache Description:

Approach this cache from Route 9. Plenty of room on the shoulder to park. You'll see a well-traveled path starting at the guardrail that'll take you to GZ. Cache is small, but large enough for small trade items.

On August 28/29, 2011 the Au Sable River sustained record floods as a result of Tropical Storm Irene. The storm caused considerable damage to the communities and businesses along the river. While at this location you can see evidence of the flood waters, but luckily the damage wasn't as severe here due to the width of the river. Unfortunately, just a mile or so downstream Ausable Chasm was devastated as were the communities of Au Sable Forks and Jay upstream. Ausable Chasm is as narrow as 20' with towering vertical walls, causing the river to surge up over 70'. Imagine a river rising over 7 stories at a force stronger than a tsunami. Certainly an event that the locals do not wish to ever see again.

The cache is located close to the river, but high enough (hopefully) to sustain normal flooding. DO NOT attempt this cache if the river is flooding to the point where you have to step in the water. The sandstone can be very slippery when wet. Congrats to 46er3487 for FTF honors! Way2go Bro!
