Geocache Description:

Osprey

A pair of osprey, sometimes called fish eagles, has nested on this bay of Yahara River since 1997.In 2003 the original nest blew down on Mother's Day from a strong gust of wind during a thunderstorm. In February of 2004 American Transmission erected a new safer platform for the large nest. The osprey readily accepted it and has rebuilt a new nest. The nest can be seen on top of the eastern power pole in the middle of the water.

The female osprey can be distinguished from the marble by her necklace of brown which encircles her upper white breast. His breast is all white. The all white underside, the distinct elbow crook in the otherwise flat wings and the hovering flight while fishing all distinguish this bird from others, even at a distance.

the female incubates 2-3 eggs which hatch around Memorial Day. The chicks will spend most of the summer in the nest and fledge sometime in August. The parents will stay with the young, teaching them to feed by diving for fish, their main diet. In October the birds migrate south, flying to Central and South America for the winter.Young ospreys stay there a couple of years until maturity and then return to the Midwest to nest their own. Some osprey pair together year after year but they are not known to mate for life.
