Just a short distance from the motorway this cache takes you to a once busy and important town which has been bypassed by so many. Now a sleepy villiage, Beattock bustles no more.
The town of Beattock was once an important stop in years gone by. Before powerful diesel and electric engines, old steam trains struggled up the tracks to the beattock summit. At over 300m the summit is the highest point on the west coast mainline and a second engine used to have to join the back of the train at Beattock to help push it up the steep incline.
Further back in time before the motor car coaches travelling north or south used to stop at the brig inn to rest thier horses. The inn and the bridge itself were designed by the famous scottish engineer thomas telford. Completed in 1819 the bridge has stood the test of time well. I'm sure telford would be proud if not a little worried to see 44 tonnes of articulated lorry cross his brigde today nearly 200 years on!
Be sure to look over the parapet at evan water below. You'd hardly know you were on such a magnificent bridge otherwise.
Start looking on the east side of the bridge behind a more modern piece of engineering! Cache container is a long tablet tube.
