The West Essex Trail is situated on the former right-of-way of the Caldwell Branch of the old Erie-Lackawanna Railroad.
Acquired in 1985 through Green Acre funding, the 2.84 mile trail runs from Arnold Way in Verona, northeast to the Passaic County line. It crosses over Route 23 and the Peckman River and passes along Cedar Grove Community Park. The primary access to the trail is from Fairview Avenue, near Verona High School.
Public debate delayed the County acquisition long enough for the railroad company to sell off some intermittent parcels, effectively preventing the county from extending the trail as far as Grover Cleveland Park in Caldwell, as originally planned.
A section of the Lenape Trail runs along most of the West Essex Trail, joining with it at Arnold Way and following it to just beyond Bowden Road in Cedar Grove, where it turns off to the east. The Lenape Trail is a Sierra Club sponsored walking/biking trail that winds throughout Essex County, passing through many county and municipal parks.
The below is the suggested cache list for this journey:
Start Devil's Hole GCGY04 (and grab several nearby optional caches)
*Distinct path off of the rail trail
*-Cache Us if you can
Rail Trail Rally
Complete Devil's Hole
Devil's hole alone takes about 2 hrs start to finish. Going through the above suggested list, by bike should take about 4 hrs. Parking at both ends and walking should take about 6hrs. After you start Devil's Hole and get to onto the trail where W.E.T. 1 is, the hardest part is over.
The trail is slightly downhill from 1-17, and slightly uphill from 17-1.
GPS reception can be funny in certain areas due to the tortured spirits from the psych ward. Clues are pretty precise.
I was placing caches on the trail and remembered being in this spot for a cache last year. To my surprise, E.H.C. 2 GC1RPMT has been archived. This is a rip off of that cache. I would never have found this spot otherwise.
There is a clear path to the cache from the rail trail at the posted waypoint. Very little bushwacking is needed.
