S.B. Elliott State Park and Parker Dam State Parks are the only two state parks located in Clearfield County. They are jewels located in the heart of the Moshannon State Forest with easy access from Interstate 80. This is bear country so please do not place any food item or items with even the slightest smell in the cache.
Both S.B. Elliott State Park and Parker Dam State Park have a history with with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Elliott Park was named for the Honorable Simon B. Elliott, a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and a conservationist who promoted the idea of replanting the forests in order to limit erosion and fires. The CCC built the park in 1933. The young men of Camp S-116-PA built many of the cabins, roads, pavilions and trails that exisit today. Located at SB Elliott Park is a 45 acre bareroot tree nursery that was built by forester William F Degue. The trees from this nursery were used to replant the forest after all the trees were stripped by lumbering at the turn of the century. The facility could grow 50 million trees annually. The seedlings supported the projects of the CCC in the 1930's and forest replant efforts following WWII. Parker Dam State Park is a 968 acre PA State Park surronded by the Moshannon State Forest. It was constructed during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Lumbering began as early as 1794 in Clearfield County, harvesting the white pine and hemlock. The tall white pines fetched a high price in Baltimore for the use as masts on ships. Logging picked up force during the 1850s when the Susquehanna Boom was built across the West Branch of the Susquehanna Riover at Williamsport. Once the trees disappeared, the people were soon to follow. The Commonwealth bought the thousands of acres of deforested and burned land and began the massive reforestation effort. A tornado Struck Portions of Parker Dam State Park in 1985. This has given the state the opportunity to show first hand how a forest regrows. The land to the west of Mud Run Road was left untouched and many large and bare tree trunks were left standing. The fallen trees to the east of the road were salvaged for lumber. The forest is regrowning at different rates on either side of the road providing a study of the effects of man on reforestation. The final cache is located in an area that was hit by the tornado. This cache is part of the Clearfield County 2012 Geotrail. It features parks and places of recreational activity. Clearfield County is blessed with many opportunities to enjoy yourself in your “off” time. The county is part of the Pennsylvania Wilds, home to millions of acres of unspoiled forests and mountains for hiking, fishing, biking or just watching the wildlife (www.pawilds.com).
