Kamapua'a, a deity of cloud, rain, forest and numerous other body forms, is said to have stood on this cliff while offering his love to Pele, the woman of fire.

Pele replied to Kamapua'a's calls with insults. He was so enraged that he started to fight with Pele. The battle of fire, forest and rain lasted for a great length of time until the two deities were weakened. Kamapau'a only saved himself from the last bit of Pele's fire by taking an Ama'uma'u (Sadleria) fern body and surrounding Kilauea. This is also why Pele's home, the pit crater on the floor of Kilauea is called 'Halema'uma'u' (House surrounded by the Ama'uma'a fern).

- Ancient Hawaiian Legend

A fumarole (Latin fumus, smoke), or steam vent, is an opening in a planet's crust, often in the neighborhood of volcanoes, which emits steam and gases such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen sulfide. The steam is created when superheated water turns to steam as its pressure drops when it emerges from the ground. The name solfatara, from the Italian solfo, sulfur (via the Sicilian dialect), is given to fumaroles that emit sulfurous gases. 1

Fumaroles may occur along tiny cracks or long fissures, in chaotic clusters or fields, and on the surfaces of lava flows and thick deposits of pyroclastic flows. A fumarole field is an area of thermal springs and gas vents where magma or hot igneous rocks at shallow depth are releasing gases or interacting with groundwater. From the perspective of groundwater, fumaroles could be described as a hot spring that boils off all its water before the water reaches the surface. 1

The most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
