Het kabouterreservaat
Tijdens een onlangs gehouden kabouterspotterdag in het Oisterwijkse bossen- en vennengebied is gebleken dat de kabouterpopulatie alhier ernstig met uitsterven wordt bedreigd. Zelden of nooit wordt er nog een waargenomen. Om verdere terugloop van deze bevolking te voorkomen is met toestemming van de vereniging Natuurmonumenten besloten een gebied af te bakenen waarbinnen deze populatie zich kan herstellen en waaruit de kabouters niet kunnen ontsnappen. Ter nagedachtenis aan de beroemde Griekse wijsgeer en kabouterkenner Pythagoras is besloten dit reservaat de vorm te geven van een "Egyptische" driehoek met een omtrek van 1200 meter.
The gnome reserve
A recent survey of the gnome population in the woods around the beautiful fens near Oisterwijk has shown that the gnomes in this area are seriously threatened with extinction. Spotting one has become a rare exception. To avoid further decline of this population it was agreed, with consent of the Dutch National Trust, to fence off an area in which the gnome population can grow and from which the gnomes cannot escape. It was decided to give this gnome reserve the shape of an "Egyptian" triangle, in memory of the famous Greek philosopher and gnome expert Pythagoras, with a perimeter of 1200 metres.

De bedoeling is de plaats van elk hoekpunt en vervolgens de locatie van de cache te vinden. Het is niet nodig en ook niet toegestaan van de paden af te wijken; alleen voor de cachelocatie is hierop een uitzondering gemaakt van minder dan 10 meter aan de noordzijde van het pad. Kalibreer je kompas en stel dit in op het ware noorden. Potlood, papier en geodriehoek kunnen van pas komen - en let bij drukte op voor pottenkijkers! Voor wie dat wil is er koffie onderweg.
The challenge is to find the position of each of the corners of the triangle and eventually to locate the cache. It is not necessary and indeed not allowed to deviate from the paths, but an exception has been made for the location of the cache which is hidden about 10 metres north of a path. Please calibrate your compass and set it to true north. Pencil, paper and protractor will be useful - and please beware of snoopers at busy times! Coffee is available along the way.
Kabouter Corneel
Juist toen ik wilde beginnen met het uitzetten van de route kwam er warempel toch nog een kabouter vanachter een boomstronk tevoorschijn. Vanzelfsprekend heb van ik deze bijzondere gebeurtenis een foto genomen en de plaats waar dit gebeurde als waypoint S vastgelegd. De kabouter stelde zich voor als Corneel, toonde zich een groot voorstander van het project en wilde mij graag helpen bij het uitzetten van de hoekpunten A, B en C van het reservaat. Daarvoor mocht hij bij elk van deze punten de foto.
Het is verstandig om alle waypoints op je GPS-apparaat vast te leggen; je kunt ze verderop nog nodig hebben. De route van A via B naar C verloopt overeenkomstig de draairichting van de wijzers van de klok.
Gnome Corneel
To my great surprise and joy an unexpected gnome appeared from behind a large tree trunk just as I wanted to start plotting the route. Of course I took a picture of this extraordinary event and I marked the location where it took place as waypoint S. The gnome introduced himself as Corneel and announced that he was great supporter of the project. He helped plotting the corners A, B and C of the reserve. In return he wanted to be photographed near each of these points. It is advisable to register all waypoints in your GPS device; you may need them later. The route runs clockwise from A via B to C.

Vlakbij S staat een paaltje van de wandelroute "Als stenen konden spreken". Corneel heeft alle letters geteld die uit het paaltje zijn gesneden - ze zitten voor hem mooi op ooghoogte! - waarbij de kabouter geen onderscheid heeft gemaakt tussen kleine letters en hoofdletters. De peilrichting in graden van S naar hoekpunt A is gelijk aan het aantal letters dat geen p is. De afstand van S tot A in meters is 10 meer dan het viervoud van het aantal medeklinkers.
Very near S you'll find a post marking the walking route "Als stenen konden spreken" ("If stones could speak"). Corneel counted all the letters which have been cut out of the post - they're at eye level for him! - without distinguishing between uppercase and lowercase characters. The bearing in degrees from S to corner A equals the number of letters that are not a p. The distance from S to A in metres is 10 more than the quadruple of the number of consonants.
Niet ver van hoekpunt A staat een mooie bank waarop kabouter Corneel graag van het uitzicht genoot - al kon hij niet met zijn voetjes bij de grond. Hij heeft alle letters van het alfabet geteld die op de rugleuning staan, waarbij hij weer geen onderscheid heeft gemaakt tussen kleine letters en hoofdletters. De peilrichting in graden van hoekpunt A naar hoekpunt B is 3 keer het aantal letters dat geen c is.
Not far from corner A there is a lovely bench on which gnome Corneel used to enjoy the view - even though his feet could not reach the floor. He counted all the letters of the alphabet engraved into the backrest of the bench, again not distinguishing between uppercase and lowercase characters. The bearing in degrees from corner A to corner B is 3 times the number of letters that are not a c.
Ook vlakbij hoekpunt C staat een bank die kabouter Corneel vaak bezocht. Hier heeft hij geteld hoeveel woorden (inclusief eigennamen) er op de rugleuning staan, en hoe vaak de letter U er op voorkomt.
De peilrichting in graden van C naar de cache is 333 plus het aantal U’s. De afstand in meters van B naar de cache is 666 min twee keer het aantal woorden.
Near corner C there is another bench which gnome Corneel visited frequently. Here, he counted the number of words (including names) engraved into the backrest of the bench, and the number of times the letter U occurs in the engraved text. The bearing in degrees from C to the cache is 333 plus the number of U's. The distance in metres from B to the cache is 666 minus double the number of words.
Bij het punt C ging kabouter Corneel er plotseling vandoor - eigenlijk wantrouwde ik dat rugzakje al vanaf het begin. Met kabouters valt niet te spotten, onderschat ze niet! Dichtbij de plaats waar de cache is verborgen heeft een van mijn spotters de voortvluchtige toch nog gesignaleerd en gekiekt. De foto die daar is genomen kan je misschien helpen bij het loggen van de cache - wees weer op je hoede voor pottenkijkers.
At corner C gnome Corneel suddenly made a bid for freedom - I must admit I was suspicious of his little backpack right from the start. Gnomes can't be fooled, don't underestimate them! The escapee was spotted and photographed by one of my assistants only once more, very near the location where the cache is hidden, before he finally disappeared. That picture may be of help when logging the cache - again beware of snoopers.
