Geocache Description:

This area is home to many creatures of the barrens. You may see animals that make their homes in burrows they dig in the sandy soil of the barrens such as gophers, ground squirrels, woodchucks and badgers. Dead trees or snags provide perches for large birds, food in the form of insects for woodpeckers and homes for bluebirds. When the snags fall to the ground they provide habitat for skinks. In this cache you will find Ranger Rick’s paw print. He might live in a hollow tree or log or even in a ground burrow. He likes to feed along streams and lakes and will eat fruits, nuts, grains, insects, frogs, crayfish, and bird eggs. He likes to dunk his food in water before eating it. His ringed tail is as long as his body. Find the cache and read the additional clue about Ranger Rick and then stamp your passport with his paw.

This cache is located in an area designated as a State Natural Area with special permission from Thomas Meyer, Conservation Biologist with the State Natural Areas Program of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Heather Wolf, property manager at Buckhorn State park.  Please stay on the designated trails, all caches are located within 20 feet of the trail.  Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form.
