Geocache Description:

Religious differences spark different burial locations.

This cache is not meant to be irreverent or morbid but to point out the rich history of religious differences expressed in burial locations chosen in Virginia.

Virginia has a visual representation of the result differences in religion. After the first cemetery was moved (see nearby cache for Virginia's oldest cemetery); two new large cemeteries were constructed nearby and a small Judean cemetery. The Catholics are buried in Calvary Cemetery with clear signs marking when you are entering this section, the Greenwood Cemetery for the Protestants, and the small Range Hebrew Cemetery, and military section in a military V layout. Perhaps drive through the cemetery to see the clear dividing line between the different sections. There are visual clues to the different sections. The story goes that one Christian religion didn't want the people from the other Christian religion buried in the same area so two distinct cemeteries were created right next to each other. From satellite imagery, you can see at least one cross formed in the road layout of the cemetery when viewed from the entrance as well as the military V.

The cache itself is NOT in the cemetery it overlooks it. You do not need to enter the fence line into the cemetery to get to this cache. This cache was very deliberately placed very far away from any headstones, flowers, or other sentimental areas to avoid disrespecting anyone dead or living. Again, if you are thinking about rooting around the cemetery with a shovel, asking the caretaker about geocaching, awakening the dead, or modifying cemetery property in any way; this isn't needed to locate this cache. Feel free to visit the cemetery until it closes at 10 PM, but the cache itself is not within the confines of the cemetery. There are many posted rules such as no pets, no artificial flowers, no hands, no non-granite monuments, no laughing; ok, I made only the last one up...
