Geocache Description:

We love geocaching. We love Kayaking...why not combine the two of them to make a "river trail" right here on the Shenango River? This isn’t your average geocaching trail though, once you complete the trail and record 25 randomly placed code letters you can then claim your TRACKABLE GEOCOIN by contacting the cachers listed on the passport The Shenango River is approximately 92 miles long, traveling through Ohio & Pennsylvania before joining with the Mahoning River to form the Beaver River. The geotrail will consist of 27 miles of winding river on the upper Shenango so plan your trip accordingly. Life vests, dry bags, Ziplocs, spare batteries, floatable eyeglass cords, water or drinks, snacks and possibly some bug spray are all recommended. PLEASE CITO IF ABLE TO!!.

Its headwaters are located in the Hartstown Swamp in Crawford County, PA...from there it travels through Crawford County through the Pymatuning Reservoir, before becoming a river again at the outflow of the dam. From there it crosses into Mercer County and into the Shenango River Lake, before continuing from the outflow of the dam through the rest of Mercer County and making a cameo appearance in Trumbull County, Ohio before crossing back into Lawrence County(PA) and meeting up with the Mahoning River to form the Beaver River. It is part of the Ohio River & Mississippi River watersheds

The River is home to a lot of interesting history, from remnants of the Erie Extension Canal to Mercer County's only remaining covered bridge, or perhaps take a float back in history past the old mills that used to produce ore & steel along the river. Not only rich in history, but there is a multitude of wildlife to take in as well, with various mammals and waterfowl to see. While placing these caches we witnessed Great Blue Herons, Cedar Waxwings, Kingfishers, and there are Bald Eagles and other birds of prey in the area as well. If you like to fish, the Shenango River is home to a variety of species of game fish, so drop a line while you float & cache if you like too!

The River is no where near "white water" , however be mindful of the weather forecast before you paddle, because you never know how fast a flash flood can hit. Be careful and wear a life vest! It is a family friendly river, so pack a lunch & have a great time. We always enjoy this little gem in our backyards!
The caches are ALL the same containers....all hidden in a way that is only accessed by paddling, floating, swimming, or wading to. Please replace them exactly as you found them to make sure they stay in place for future. Also we ask if you can please TRY to dry your hands the best you can before getting the log out of the containers as to prevent them from getting wet. INSIDE the lid is a letter, you’ll need to record these letters on the printable passport below. EACH LETTER CORRESPONDS TO THE NUMBER CACHE YOU FOUND IT AT. For example…if you find letter Z in cache #1 the replace the #1 on the puzzle board with the letter Z and so on. Either record the letters as you go on a normal piece of paper then transfer them to the passport or just record them on the passport as you go. They’ll need to be on the passport when presented to receive your coin.

Puzzle board to be up Soon
