Muistatteko Nik Kershawin laulun The Riddle. Sehän taisi olla jonkinlainen hitti 80-luvulla. Laulussa lauletaan, ”There’s a hole in the ground…” – maassa on reikä. Ja kyllä, The Riddle –kätkö sijaitsee juuri sen aukon lähellä.
Does anybody remember a hit song The Riddle from Nik Kershaw. It was back to eighties, I guess. The song lyrics says, “There’s a hole in the ground…” Yes, the hole is right there, close to The Riddle cache.
Tuskinpa kenelläkään on muuten mitään syytä mennä mäelle jossa kätkö on, hyttysiä, paarmoja ja hirvikärpäsiä kuhisevaan metsään. Mutta se aukko! Kätkö sijaitsee pienellä kivikkoisella mäellä. Luultavasti kivikko on jääkauden tekosia ja luultavasti suurin osa kivistä on maan alla. Kätkön maasto on tosiaankin haasteellinen. Ehkä siirtolohkareet ovat aikanaan jääneet konkeloon ja peittyneet maa-aineksella muodostaen luolan tai onkalon. Mäellä voi olla useampikin piilossa oleva onkalo mutta tämä kyseinen on edelleen näkyvillä. Luola on kohtuullisen suuri ja ken vain uskaltaa ryömiä syvemmälle, havaitsee luolan olevan yllättävän tilava. Käynti luolan syvempään osaan vaatii hieman hoksottimia. Vaan eipä silti, luolaan ei todellakaan kannata ryömiä. Ja yksin sinne ei missään tapauksessa kannata mennä ilman pinnalla olevaa varmistajaa. Aina on olemassa sortumisvaara ja vaara jumittua luolaan. Luolan suuaukko kannattaa silti käydä katsomassa.
Kätkö ei ole luolassa. Koordinaatit viittaavat luolan pohjoispuolella olevaan suurehkoon kiveen. Kätkö näkyy kiven päältä selvästi. Metsään on turha piilotella mitään mikrokätköjä, maastossa on tarpeeksi haastetta itsessäänkin. Luolan suuaukko on muutaman metrin päässä kivestä ja kätköstä etelään.
Kätkön lähelle pääsee autolla peltotietä pitkin. Auton saa hyvin tien sivuun tai pellon laitaan. Reittipisteissä on merkattu autolle sopiva paikka. Kätkölle ei kannata mennä suoraan autopaikalta vaan kannattaa kulkea antamani reittipisteen kautta. Maasto on todellakin kivikkoista. Reittipisteeltä kulkee ehkä helpoin reitti kätkölle. Kätkölle ei kannata mennä kesällä koska ylitettävänä on viljelty pelto. Paras aika kätkölle on syksyllä elokorjuun jälkeen kun voi kulkea sänkipellon yli. Syksyllä on muutenkin mukavampi liikkua kun ei ole miljoonaa paarmaa kaverina. Kätkölle pääsee myös talvella. Peltoa reunustavassa ojassa saattaa olla vettä, joten kumisaappaat on hyvä olla jalassa.
I guess no one has any reason to go to this little rocky hill loaded with mosquitoes, horse flies and deer flies. But the hole in the ground, wanna see that? The cache is located in a small hill in the woods. It is very rocky hill, quite difficult terrain indeed. I bet most of the rocks are beneath really. I think the hill is formed due to glacier. Glacial boulders are tangled, covered in soil and caves and cavities are created. It is possible there are even more caves in the hill but this one is open, at least. The cave is surprisingly large. One, if brave enough, can find another passage to deeper part of the cave. Nevertheless, is it bad idea to enter in to the cave. If doing so, please make sure there is someone on surface to support you. There is always risk for cave collapse or get stuck inside the cave. Even not entering the cave, the entry is still worth of seeing.
The cache is not in the cave. Coordinates are for relatively big rock north from the cave. The cache can be seen from the rock. Micro caches are not any good the woods. There is enough challenge due to difficult terrain. The cave entry is few meters to south from the cache. There is a road near the cache. Car park is give as waypoint. There is also one more waypoint for easy access to the cache. The straight line from the car park to the cache goes over difficult terrain. Please use given waypoint for easier access. Please avoid cache during growing season. There is a field to trespass. Whatsoever, summer is not best time for this cache due to horse flies and mosquitoes. The best seasons for this cache are autumn and winter. Make sure to wear rubber boots as you have to go over some ditches
