CHIPPEWA MORAINE CIRCLE TRAIL SERIES
Wisconsin has no shortage of glacial scenery and place names bearing the word moraine. The Chippewa Moraine’s prime glacial scenery, including 17 lakes, is something special. Here there’s an eye-pleasing symmetry to the pattern of rounded hilltops and reflecting lakes. Unlike southeastern Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine, where the glaciers’ forward movement formed the moraines, this landscape is a result of glacial ice that had stopped moving. After the glacier’s horizontal movement ceased, its surface debris flowed into low spots in the ice. Those accumulations of rock debris formed the hills, called hummocks, and depressions formed by large chunks of ice, thicker spots in the ice sheet, melted to become the kettle lakes.

You can park on the west end near GC3Q8DG, “Wired,” or on the east end near GC3VPPM, “parking IAT off M” which are both on Cty Hwy M. You can also start in the middle at “Old Foot Path to Circle Trail” which can be reached by going south on 127th St off of Hwy M. If you park at “Wired”, you will need a Wis. State Park sticker. You can purchase one there. Daily permits are $5.
The placement of these caches was intended to be an incentive to visit this beautiful area and to break up the hike into short segments. The caches were intended to be fairly easy to find and all are right off or just a short distance from the trail. The trail is family friendly. The difficulty and terrain ratings take the hills and distance (approx. 2.5 miles) into consideration. This series is probably best accomplished using two vehicles, one parked at the start and one parked at the end of your route.
